Foreign Language

At CHS, we teach three languages other than English, including Latin, French, and Spanish. With the exception of Latin, all courses are taught with a greater emphasis on oral and aural fluency than is sometimes typical of high school language instruction. This is the benefit of exceptionally small enrollment, since classes in this division typically range from four to eight. Our goal is for students to be able to enter college language instruction at a high enough level to obtain fluency regardless of their major. Students who wish to pursue additional languages, from Korean to Norwegian, are allowed to do so through individual instruction, online instruction or college enrollment.

Exchange trip to France

We offer classes from begging to advanced levels for each language. The individual levels offered each year reflect the needs of our students in that given year.

Videos Created By Our Language Students

While only virtual student exchanges were available, our students of French collaborated with students of English at Lycée Charles Péguy in the town of Gorges.  CHS students Madeline D. and Reuben M. created this virtual tour of our school to share with students there.

In an effort to bolster CHS’s outreach to the Spanish-speaking community in Roanoke, these intermediate-level students in their third year of study decided it would be valuable for the school to dive into what makes our school unique, what Spanish-speaking families of prospective students might want to know about our school, and how to package the information concisely and attractively. This video is the end-product of a Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit where the students had to solve a real-world problem using their intercultural awareness and Spanish-language knowledge. This freshman Spanish class brainstormed, planned, filmed, and edited this film while collaborating exclusively in the target language (Spanish!).
