Literature and Writing

We approach Literature and Writing at Community High with these basic assumptions: that all people benefit by becoming better writers and speakers, and that all lives are benefited by a deep and lasting appreciation of Literature. Our approach to English is therefore different from that of many schools, in that we stress writing and rewriting, and make active use of the workshop method. In this way, students learn to edit themselves and others, and to approach composition as an evolving and dynamic process. We teach Literature differently too. Rather than rely upon a rigid and externally dictated canon, our teachers tailor classes semester by semester to their own areas of expertise, and to the varied interests of the students. In this way, we are able to offer a wide variety of classes, from 19th Century Russian Novels to Avant-Garde Poetry.
